I think
that with social media allowing everyday citizens to become authors, editors,
and publishers of news and information that it has decreased the quality of
news information. With social media it allows you to get news instantly but it is
most likely not from a reliable resource with proof and it makes it a lot
harder for people to distinguish what is fact from fiction. Social media has
made it a lot harder to get the truth online especially with twitter; people
will "Retweet" what someone else said and it can go on and on
starting rumors and spreading them to the general population. I think social
media has increased the quantity not quality of news and information. You also
have to be careful when researching to use good sources and provide evidence;
especially with sites where anyone with an account can edit pages and give you
false information about any topic you are looking at for example Wikipedia. I
also think that legitimate news and information sources do use social media to
improve the quality and quickness of news and information reaching people. Such
as CBC News using Twitter to inform people, they have a different Twitter for
each region and they also have a CBC top news stories and news alerts Twitter.
Social media makes a lot of things easier for people but at the same time
people have to do a lot more work looking for legitimate information and news
sources which is funny considering one of the reasons people use social media
is to get news faster and easier. I believe that social media has
permanently decreased the quality of news and information that we receive
because it enables anyone to author, edit, and publish information whether it
is the truth or a random made up story to garner attention.

I agree with everything you’ve said the quality of media in today’s world has decreased due to the fact that anyone can create a web site or a twitter or a facebook and say whatever is on their mind. Regardless if its the truth about something or not
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with most things you have said, but even real editors in the media give out false information when it comes to news articles. They do this to make the article more interesting, and I can say this because of personal experience. Yes, there is plenty of false information going around, but there always is, like when you are doing a project and you use Google, fifty different possible responses come up! I think twitter, facebook and such give people an opportunity to share information and knowledge that they know among everyone else. Social media sites can give false information but they can also give us correct events and dates! Therefore, I see what you are saying, but in my opinion I still think social media has expanded and given us an opportunity for us to share what we know with others!
I agree with your answer. Social media has made the quality of information on the internet unreliable. A person can have an opinion on something but it doesn't make it fact if it's on the internet.
ReplyDeleteI concur with your statements. The reposting of twitter and facebook statues is like a game of telephone. Messages get miscontrued, rumors begin and gossip flys. I once saw a whole facebook page dedicated to the death of Bill Bye the Science guy with thousands of followers. I dont see this problem getting any better in the near future. Though the fact that real news corporations can spread breaking news faster to the masses could be seen as beneficial.
ReplyDeleteI agree with some of your points but i also disagree with other comments you have made. i do agree that with twitter the "Retweets" do make things questionable but the quality of news update is reliable because you have news network like cp24 on twitter and the information the post are reliable source that you never have to question.
ReplyDeleteI do see where you are getting at with on twitter especially how information can be misled because people do not get their information from a reliable source, but dont you think that also authors, editors and publishers could also be getting their information from an unreliable source? Also, majority of publishers, etc. dont always tell the truth just so they can spice up their story to make it more interesting just so that they can get their news story in the paper or on the news.
